About the Event
Sex workers and sex positive creators are facing unprecedented levels of online censorship. From FOSTA/SESTA to Project 2025 and new age verification laws, the internet is rapidly shifting in ways that threaten both safety and livelihood. This Town Hall brought together community members, organizers, and digital rights experts to break down:
- How we got here: The policies and laws that laid the foundation for today’s censorship.
- What’s happening now: A fact-based look at the current state of the internet—platform by platform. Participants will also be invited to share restrictions they’ve encountered in real time.
- What now? Strategies for navigating these laws: Should we obey or push the envelope? How can we resist while staying safe? What communities, resources, platforms, and payment processors are SX positive and SW friendly?
- Action steps: Can we make a collective push toward safer platforms? What commitments can we agree to make together in order to support and inform our audiences?
- Q&A: An open space for participants to ask questions and share experiences.
Our goal is to unite, inform, and empower SW’s and SX positive creators by providing practical tools, trusted resources, and a path forward in the face of escalating censorship.
Speakers
Daisy Ducati: (She/Her) YAS Work Secretary, Daisy Ducati is an award winning adult performer and activist with an BA in Communications and over a decade in the industry. Through her lived experience, Daisy has closely monitored the political rhetoric that pushes for online censorship as well as the way that social media algorithms are used to suppress and erase subversive and adult themed content and ideas.
Monique Starr: (They/Them/Theirs) is a pro-domme, content creator, journalist, writer, media educator, and sex worker advocate whose work lies at the intersections of sex, kink, media, pop culture, pleasure, and radical justice for fat, Black femmes. A core member of the BIPOC Sex Worker Writers Space (BSWWS), their goal is not only to empower the communities they serve through intersectional and inclusive media making, but also to encourage fellow fat, Black sex workers to use their voice and storytelling as an act of resistance and a catalyst for change.
Mike Stabile: (He/Him) Mike Stabile is longtime anti-censorship activist and twenty-year veteran of the adult industry. As policy director for Free Speech Coalition, Mike fights against the continued censorship of sexual communities and sexual speech by both governments and platforms.
This is a collaboration between Pussy Empowered and YAS Work. We decided to create this event in the wake of the rising hostility of sex workers and adult content creators online. We are also working with Spokes Hub, as they matched us with one of their graduates for this panel.
Impact
This event had 60 sign ups, with 24 of those sign ups joining us live for the entire duration of the panel. We raised just under $1000 for this event, which included sponsorship of $500. The recording will be sent out to all 60 audience members and will be available for free for anyone choosing to stream or access the information afterwards. This panel was geared towards sex workers. Our goal is to educate and create safe spaces for sex workers to gather and talk to each other about issues we are all facing. Comments about this event were: “This is really inspiring.
